CONSERVATION AT WILDERNESS NORTH

CONSERVING THE NORTHERN WILDERNESS FOR GENERATIONS

At Wilderness North we believe that the wilderness we operate in is not just our workplace. It is our responsibility. For more than 30 years we have worked to preserve the natural health of the lakes, forests, and remote ecosystems around our lodges and outposts. We take great pride in being a conservation focused operation with a long standing commitment to fisheries, habitat protection, and sustainable travel.

CONSERVING THE NORTHERN WILDERNESS FOR GENERATIONS

OUR CONSERVATION LEGACY

Wilderness North has operated fly in lodges and outpost cabins in remote northern Ontario for more than three decades. Our commitment to the land, the water, and the people who visit and live here has only strengthened over time. The lakes we steward remain productive, the fish populations remain healthy, and the wilderness continues to feel as untouched as ever.
From the beginning we have maintained low pressure, fly in only access, and transparent conservation policies. Practices such as selective harvest, catch and release, and long term fishery monitoring have helped maintain strong populations of walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout. Many of our lakes are now known for their consistency and trophy potential because they have been responsibly managed for so many years.

OUR CONSERVATION LEGACY

SUSTAINABLE FISHING AND CATCH AND RELEASE

CATCH AND RELEASE COMMITMENT
Catch and release has always been a cornerstone of our approach to sustainable fisheries. We encourage guests to release trophy sized fish to preserve breeding stock and protect the long term health of the ecosystem.

RESPONSIBLE HANDLING
Our staff share up to date best practices, including gentle hook removal, minimizing time out of water, and reducing extended fight times for larger fish. We also support the use of barbless hooks on sensitive lakes to reduce injury and improve survival rates after release.
Sustainable catch and release is one of the most effective ways to maintain the quality of our fisheries for future generations.

CONSERVATION PARTNERSHIPS AND RESEARCH

We work with local partners, regional conservation organizations, and long time northern stewards to support habitat protection and responsible recreation. Over the years we have collected biological data, guest catch records, and staff observations that help track fish populations and lake health.
This information guides our practices and helps us adapt as needed. We believe
conservation succeeds when it is based on accurate information, collaboration, and long term thinking.

YOUR ROLE AS A GUEST

Every Wilderness North guest plays an important part in our conservation mission. Small actions make a big difference.
How You Can Help:

  • Follow catch and release guidelines
  • Respect selective harvest and size limits
  • Keep shorelines undisturbed
  • Never leave waste behind
  • Reduce handling time with fish
  • Respect wildlife and observe from a distance
  • Report any concerns or unusual observations to staff

Guests often tell us that our lakes feel untouched. That feeling exists because everyone who visits treats the wilderness with care.

LOOKING AHEAD

Our commitment to conservation grows with each passing season. We continue to protect lakes through mindful access, support sustainable fisheries, and practice low impact operations at every lodge and outpost.
As Wilderness North evolves, our focus remains rooted in the same guiding principle that started it all: protect the wilderness so future generations can feel the same sense of awe and connection that our earliest guests experienced.
